Whittington Wins FCS National Defensive Player of the Week
LORMAN, Miss. - The awards kept coming for junior Terry Whittington from the Alcorn State University football program as he was named the STATS FCS National Player of the Week, announced Monday afternoon.
Whittington earned HBCU National Player of the Week and SWAC Defensive Player of the Week honors earlier in the morning.
The defensive lineman turned in an all-around game for the Braves on Saturday in their 33-26 victory over Grambling State. The Cooper City, Florida native notched career-highs of 15 tackles, 6.0 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
The 4.5 sacks came close to the school record of 5.0 set by Bryant Mix in 1995 against Texas Southern. Whittington's previous career-highs were 10 tackles, 3.0 tackles for a loss and 1.0 sack.
Whittington helped the Braves sack GSU eight times in the game.
Whittington is part of an Alcorn defense that leads the nation in both sacks (4.5 s/g) and tackles for a loss (9.5 tfl/g). The Braves also rank sixth in the nation in total defense (266.6 ypg), seventh in rushing defense (.89.9 ypg), seventh in third down conversion defense (.286), 10th in red zone defense (.700), 12th in fumbles recovered (8) and 16th in scoring defense (19.9 ppg).
